STainless Steel Electrical Applications
Gibson Stainless & Specialty Inc. serves a variety of industries.
Corrosion is one of the biggest challenges faced across industries. It is estimated that the cost of corrosion worldwide is $2.5 trillion. Corrosion costs are not limited to individual component failure; worn-out parts and conduit systems can result in total plant shutdowns, lost production batches, and additional labor required to bring equipment back online. In some instances, there are also dangers associated with reinstallation in hazardous environments or where accessibility is an issue.
Nearly every industry contends with corrosive environments and harsh conditions. In looking at each industry and the characteristics of stainless steel, it is easy to see how stainless steel is a reliable, versatile solution that is able to stand up to these challenges.

Characteristics of Stainless Steel
The material composition of stainless steel provides superior corrosion resistance; its chromium content - greater than 10.5% helps to form a passive oxide layer on the surface which helps minimize further corrosion. This protective film forms and re-forms in an oxygenated environment, giving stainless steel a "self-healing" property that allows stainless steel products to last 10-20 times longer than galvanized metal, carbon steel, iron, etc. in the same environment.
Available in dozens of grades - each with their own specific chemistry - different types of stainless steel exhibit unique, application-specific advantages. The austenitic grades include Type 304 SS and Type 316 SS, which are the most common grades used in the electrical industry. Austenitic grades have stable crystalline structures that result in good mechanical properties, including strength and ductility, at both high and low temperature extremes.
Sometimes stainless steel is also chosen for its aesthetic appeal. Gibson Stainless’ products are provided in a bright, polished finish. This bright, polished finish can remain intact for a long period of time and helps reduce the surface area that bacteria has to cling to or that corrosive agents have to attack.
Not only does stainless steel offer corrosion resistance, durability and an aesthetic appeal, it also benefits the environment; stainless steel is able to be re-melted and reused, making it recyclable.
