How Form 7 and Form 8 conduit bodies differ

The conduit body is a key component of the raceway system, allowing for changes in the direction and bundling of wires. Because all conduit bodies have removable covers, electricians can gain easy access to the wires for pulling and maintenance.

Two of the most common conduit bodies are Form 7 and Form 8. Each have similar components: neoprene gaskets that help prevent moisture from entering the raceway and conduit covers which are reusable and may transfer from one conduit body to another of the same form. Both are designed to connect straight conduit runs as well as to make a 90-degree bends. However, there is a fundamental difference between Form 7 and Form 8 conduit bodies- the method of attaching covers to the bodies.

 Form 7 conduit bodies

Designed for compact installations, Form 7 conduit body covers are attached to the body using clips. No cover screws are necessary. While disengaging the clips to access wiring is easy, if corrosion sets in the clips, the clips may fail.

Form 8 conduit bodies

If faced with larger sets of conduit wiring, Form 8 conduit bodies supply much-needed wiring capacity. Covers are attached using screws, which ensures tight cover and gasket (neoprene) assembly, durability and greater resistance to corrosion and heat. Installing the covers is completed using standard hand tools, while the flat back design provides extra wiring ability.

choosing the right conduit body

The choice of a particular conduit body form depends on the application and specifications of each project. For optimal performance of a raceway, the right form of conduit body is important in keeping the raceway safe from damage, corrosion, and failure, while making maintenance simple.
